Three Lions Coach Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11
flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his calling.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he built a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included elite sides, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream
But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods include player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a complex game for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To create a system enabling productivity in that window, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he sought out difficult settings imaginable to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
