The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France is preparing a personal account in the coming weeks called Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts the period spent in custody.

The announcement was made shortly following Sarkozy was released as he contests the court ruling related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to obtain political financing linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“In prison there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, suggesting the account is more about his musings during isolation as opposed to extensive analysis on the overcrowded and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where noise is endless commotion,” he adds. “The din persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, Sarkozy was present by video link from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, set a precedent as past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, where an innocent man ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a space of about nine sq metres including private facilities at the correctional facility in Paris. Security personnel occupied an adjacent room.

It was stated that he had eaten just yogurt while inside because he feared any food could have been tampered with. Options were available to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Unclear remains if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who visited his client every day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “There were death threats, heard shouts at night and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody in late October after a Paris court imposed five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to secure political donations during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, with a new trial is scheduled for early next year.
