Taliban Used Discarded British Equipment to Track Down Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Hears

An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind confidential technology permitting the militant group to track down Afghans that had served with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

The source, known as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the information breach were told to change residences and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are investigating the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic breach of private information affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Occurred

An electronic document including confidential details, including identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by an official working at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The incident came to light months later, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in the UK were posted on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's this misconception that militant forces are without similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have your phone number, they can trace your precise location. That's precisely what intelligence groups accomplished.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, Person A confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the committee indicated that at least 49 family members and associates of Afghans affected by the leak had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was put in force in last year and prevented any information about it from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised Afghan families they were supporting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence where feasible and altered their mobile numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities had access to this information, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower contested that internal investigation conducted by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

She detailed horrific abuse suffered by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to force relatives to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
