New York's next mayor affirms his intention to live in historic Gracie Mansion

The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
