Forecasters have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the Met Office.
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are expected to be low, meaning additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
