Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days After Major Winter Storm.

Following a week of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably hot conditions for late February.

All-Time High Readings

During the day Friday, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, according to weather officials. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set just last year.

"Very warm conditions" were labeled on forecast charts for the region.

Safety Warnings

Authorities issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their recommendations suggested:

  • Staying hydrated.
  • Reducing outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Not leaving anyone unattended in a car.

An Extreme Shift

This dramatic increase in mercury arrives just after a powerful winter storm that battered the region recently. That event brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to higher elevations, triggering flash flood warnings for many residents.

Sadly, the storm also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.

Forecast Ahead

The outlook suggests some relief is expected. Readings were expected to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.

Additional areas that hit ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to see the upper eighties.

For the weekend, central LA can see weather in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the start of March.
