Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback remains something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-season tenure that included continental glory and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds roles in a global football capacity for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity for the DFL.
They secured England's top flight last season, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would welcome the idea of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he told Steven Bartlett: âI stated I will never coach a different club on English soil. Which implies in case it's my former club...yeah. In theory, it could happen.â
âIâm 58, that means I could make the decision in a few years, who knows. Must I choose now? If so, I wouldn't return. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.â
Pressed on which situations would have to unfold to bring him back to the dugout, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. âI donât even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,â he stated. âI donât miss coaching; I donât miss standing during downpours for lengthy sessions; I donât miss going to press conferences multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews weekly.
âNo nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the players having a nice chat, is pleasant. We won a lot of games so there was often great spirits around the place. I can still hear the captain's chuckle vividly recalled for example.â
He commended for his successor, praising him due to the changes that won the league in the previous season. They've been defeated a string of losses across various tournaments post heavy investment, though he denied the suggestion that it might signal a slump.
â[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, superb talent. Itâs a really good well-judged squad. No need for concern regarding the Reds, things will improve.â
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of Diogo Jota, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, and the effect for the team. The Portugal international lost his life in a road accident together with his sibling in July.
âWho can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond the player himself, itâs the guy he was. It's hard to picture the squad missing him. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A profound tragedy for his teammates too. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it to justify results yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that emotionally is not easy. Unbearable.â
