Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and the legal system prevailed.

Two months after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems headed to prison.

Anticipated Jailing

The convicted instigator – who had been subject to house arrest in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and challenges play out – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, amid mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security prison.

Previous Remarks on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing former military man displayed minimal compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish there, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Destination Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he expected the elderly leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing four dozen inmates: “That is practically one meter squared per inmate.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers React

He is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the biggest wrong in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed General Opinion

That may be accurate due to the significant following Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also gladdened the feelings of numerous individuals who think he should be imprisoned for planning to stop his successor from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the current administration's allied group, commented: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to receive proper treatment – but dignified handling in prison. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the severe conditions of convicts, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has always claimed that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a prison to learn what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, degrading conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Facilities

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 inmates, his expected assigned facility seems to be a adjacent penitentiary for officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive presidential palace, about 12 miles away.

Based on reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – about the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a television and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were donated by his relatives,” the report stated.

Partisan Reactions

The lawmaker denounced the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
