Over 50 lone young refugees who disappeared not long after arriving the UK and while in the care of government agencies are still missing, as per data obtained.
Many of the missing children arrived in vessels or hidden in the rear compartments of trucks and are believed to have been abducted by smugglers. This region is often the area where they first land.
Disclosed information has recorded 345 children going missing from local care, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.
Between 2021 and 2023, when designated facilities for children were run in addition to hotels in various locations, 132 children went missing from those two hotels. Among them, 108 were eventually recovered but 24 are remain unaccounted for.
From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from care facilities for these minors, with 182 found and 32 remaining vanished.
In both cases, Albanian children were the biggest contingent to vanish, accounting for half the overall number from the hotels, 68, and over 25% from the care facilities, 65.
The subsequent biggest nationalities to have gone missing from each location are Afghans subsequently Iranian nationals.
"The statistics are alarming. Behind each number is a frightened child who will previously endured serious rights violations before arriving in the UK hoping for refuge."
Legal experts highlighted that when assisting children who have broken free after being smuggled whilst missing, they observe how their emotional and physical state is permanently harmed by the abuse they endure during this time.
"Even a single minor to go missing constitutes an total collapse of the state to safeguard the most at-risk and exploited in their care. These numbers are in the several hundred."
Specialists emphasized more needed to be done to recover the missing children. "Minors have not opted to vanish. These youths should be playing football in the park and getting ready for their school qualifications, not working for smuggling networks in conditions we know entail being tied up, harmed and exploited, and punished by being denied nourishment."
In the end of 2023, after a long-running legal proceeding relating to lone child asylum seekers vanishing from all temporary accommodations, the custom of routinely accommodating children in hotels was ruled unlawful.
As an alternative, agencies agreed to strengthen security for these children by extending the use of reception centres. Following that legal decision another 44 children have disappeared from these centres, with 10 remaining unaccounted for and 34 located.
"Once a child does go missing, the risk that they are being abused rises substantially and they are definitely more vulnerable to exploitation and smuggling."
Research over an extended duration shows just how significantly more vulnerable solitary minors are as they are isolated from familiar surroundings, families, companions and communities and could have been smuggled to the United Kingdom, exploited during travel, or trafficked after arrival.
A spokesperson stated: "Any child or adolescent disappearing from supervision is a significant issue and we take every effort to protect them."
"Unaccompanied asylum seeker children are vulnerable to being trafficked and abused due to their isolation from relatives and circumstances of their travels to the UK."
The official explained that qualified care professionals assessed the children's risk of being exploited with protective measures implemented in collaboration with additional organizations, such as police and appropriate ministries.
Authorities also refer children to processes and support networks to help mitigate the risk of abuse in the UK, including the government assessment process and the Independent Child Trafficking Guardian Service. "Despite this it is challenging to halt every minor from going missing."
Another spokesperson commented: "The safety and welfare of lone migrant youths remains a priority, and we take children disappearing very gravely. We continue to regularly review our procedures for new information if this takes place, providing pertinent data with area authorities and district officials examining the situation."
