The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
