Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, Emma Coates has stepped down from the England WU23 national team to be appointed head coach for NWSL expansion side Bay FC.
She takes over from Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the premier American league. Montoya announced in September his intention to step down at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the 14-team standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â commented Coates. âThe experience has been formative both professionally and personally. Now, I feel ready and excited to push myself in a fresh challenge.â
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates oversaw the England U23s through fixtures including a narrow win over Norway in the continental competition and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Accompanying her to America is her former Lionesses staff member, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the English top division.
Bay FC's CEO, a one-time Football Association technical lead, spoke highly of Coates's credentials: âEmma is not only an superb manager, but she also has a strong record of elevating athletes to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âShe is an outstanding leader of squads and building ethos and has the football vision we were looking for,â added Cossington.
Bay FC had a mixed start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its first year before facing difficulties to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The new FA womenâs technical director, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the outgoing coaches: âOur gratitude goes to Emma and Gemma for their service and wish them all the best with their next chapter. They have played a key role in fortifying the pipeline between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly influenced the development of many promising talents who have gone on to become senior Lionesses,â Step concluded.
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates presided over the rise of several players to the England senior side, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho recently scored her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff has already commenced, to continue the growth of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the coming years.
