A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
The industry were examined under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
